What Happened On the Set of 'Rust'?

Yesterday news broke that Alec Baldwin had killed Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza on the set of the new movie 'Rust' by firing a prop gun that may have had live ammunition rounds. This accident has renewed the debate on whether real firearms are used on the set of movies and tv, but what really happened?

There hasn't been a lot of information regarding exactly what happened, and rightfully so, it is an open and ongoing investigation, but if we use a little common sense while scanning through the different articles, it would appear that they were working on a scene when the assistant director gave one of the prop guns to Baldwin. He let everyone know on the set that it was a "cold gun" which is jargon for an non-lethal weapon.

Now this is where the details aren't quite clear because one article I read said that they were shooting a scene and another article said they were rehearsing the scene. Personally, I believe they were shooting the scene because it makes no sense to use the prop gun during rehearsal does it? Why waste the rounds or risk someone getting injured for practice? That's like a pro-football team having a full contact practice the day before the big game; just doesn't happen.

While shooting the scene, Baldwin fired the weapon which then struck Halyna in the chest and Joel Souza was injured as well. There are questions to how many rounds were fired, but based on what I've read there was one shell casing turned over to the police as evidence, so it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that the bullet struck her in the chest, passed through, and then hit Souza in the shoulder.

Some people are curious to know why she was struck in the first place, and the answer is rather obvious isn't? The people who have to hold the camera sometimes have to stand in the line of fire to get certain camera angles. The Bond intro sees Bond always point his gun directly at the camera and fire. I imagine they were doing something very similar which why Hutchins and Souza were in the path of the bullet.

From everything I've read there isn't anything that warrants anyone to think this was anything more than just an unfortunate accident and anyone saying that Baldwin should go to jail is just being foolish. Baldwin was told the gun wasn't loaded with live rounds, and Baldwin has been on plenty of movie sets where he had to handle and fire a weapon, so I can't imagine he was running around the set with the gun just randomly pointing it people and firing it.

Anyone who has seen any good show about TV and movie magic knows that they have licensed and trained experts that work on these sets to make sure that very thing doesn't happen. They also make sure that all cast members undergo safety training. If anyone should get in trouble it's the person who is tasked with securing the weapons and firearms because they are supposed to be the only one handling them and loading them for the actors, and I don't even think they should be charged with anything but professional negligence.
