In Case You Missed It: Here's What You Should Know About the Danny Masterson Sentencing

Danny Masterson has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the rape of 2 women back in the early 2000s.

Backstory

Danny Masterson rose to fame on the popular television show 'That 70's Show'. In the show, Masterson played the character Hyde.

Over the show's 8 year run, Masterson developed close ties to Aston Kutcher, Wilmer Valderrama, Laura Prepon, and Mila Kunis. Topher Grace would eventually leave the show to pursue his cinematic endeavors leaving the rest of the cast to carry the show.

After 'That 70's Show', Masterson would go on to work on other projects including Netflix's 'The Ranch' where he starred along side he long time friend from 'That 70's Show' Ashton Kutcher. The show aired in 2016, but Masterson's time on the show would be short lived. In 2017 the rape allegations made headlines and Masterson would, ultimately, be written off the show.

The Allegations

In March 2017, it was first reported that the LA police were investigating Masterson for the rape of 3 women. According to the reports, Masterson and the three women all studied Scientology when these rapes occurred. The women claim that the Church of Scientology put pressure on them to not do anything about their rapes and it wasn't until Leah Remini's show 'Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath' that these women felt compelled to tell their stories.

According to the women, Masterson sexually assaulted them while they were asleep, or passed out. One of these assaults allegedly happened during a 6 year relationship with the victim. She claims she was sleeping and Masterson assaulted her.

In Nov. 2017 a fourth reported accuser says Masterson raped her in 2016, however, despite what has been called "compelling evidence" the case stalled. A few weeks later Chrissie Carnell Bixler would come forward publicly as one of Masterson's accusers.

A month after Netflix fired Masterson from 'The Ranch', Bobette Riales publicly came forward as one of Masterson's accusers. A few weeks later Masterson would be dropped by his agency due to the mounting controversy.

In 2019, the 4 women sue the Church of Scientology alleging they were stalked and intimidated after accusing the actor of raping them in the early 2000s.

Formal Charges

Formal Charges against Masterson were brought in June 2020 and he was arrest shortly after. Over the next year, the court would hear the testimony of the witnesses and ultimately decide that Masterson had to stand trial for the allegations.

The first trial had a hung jury thus it was declared a mistrial and retried again with Masterson being convicted on 2 counts of rape and being sentenced to 30 years in prison.
